CHOODA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Chooda's committed Board of Directors have organized programs to raise over $800,000 in eight years for organizations working in HIV/AIDS, poverty, and women's empowerment.

  BEN SHASBY - PRESIDENT   Ben joined the Board of Directors at Chooda in 2016 and serves on the Executive Committee. Ben has long been involved in service through events, programs, and professional roles. He was an AmeriCorps NCCC volunteer and a Peace Corps volunteer in Lesotho. While living in NYC, he volunteered extensively with New York Cares as a recurring project leader and large scale day of service site leader. After moving to San Francisco, he has led corporate volunteer projects, a monthly community project, and has restarted a leadership development fellowship program that engages community members in becoming more involved in the non-profit sector. Ben greatly enjoys engaging others in service, to have them experience the sense of community and accomplishment that accompanies the various ways of giving back.   MELANIE WISE   Melanie is passionate about the arts, environment, education, and working on behalf of families and children at all stages. As a dynamic leader with more than a decade of experience in the social sector, she helps organizations support their missions through storytelling, fundraising, partnership building, strategic planning, and management of transdisciplinary, geographically dispersed teams. She currently serves as the strategic communications director for the East Africa Preterm Birth Initiative at UCSF, where she developed the communications function and leads all communications efforts. Prior to working at UCSF, Melanie served as the chief communications officer for Breakthrough Collaborative, an education nonprofit with 24 affiliate sites across the US. For more than a decade, Melanie ran her own communications consulting firm, WiseExposition, where she had the privilege of working with hundreds of Bay Area professionals in nonprofits, educational institutions, and corporations.

She loves cycling as part of her daily commute in San Francisco and as a spin instructor at various indoor cycling studios outside her 9-5 job. She has been fortunate to be able to pursue her interests in research, writing, and program management through volunteer and professional work. She has served as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer and a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mozambique, and currently works at Stanford Consulting Group, Inc. as a research analyst.

Katy joined the Board of Directors at Chooda in 2018. She loves cycling as part of her daily commute in San Francisco and as a spin instructor at various indoor cycling studios outside her 9-5 job. She has been fortunate to be able to pursue her interests in research, writing, and program management through volunteer and professional work. Stephanie is the owner of  Van Dyke Productions , a marketing consultancy company offering business development, graphic design, proposal development, production, and event planning services to the A/E/C Industry. The company was founded in 2010. The goal of the company is to bring a broad range of marketing services to small firms which may not have significant marketing resources in house, or to large firms with an overflow of marketing needs. Stephanie has completed her fourth 550-mile  AIDS/Lifecycle  bike ride from SF to LA. In addition to being an active cyclist, she is an avid traveler and thrill seeker who is looking forward to the epic bungee jumping that is rumored to exist at Victoria Falls, where the bike route ends. He previously served as Director of Truelift, an initiative to create a trust mark signifying commitment to positive and enduring change for people living in poverty. He brings extensive experience in not-for-profit organizational development and change management, including Kiva, ACCION, and the U.S. Peace Corps in Bulgaria. As a Senior Director at Kiva, he developed the social performance strategy and badges, completed 100+ social audits of microfinance partners, and led the expansion of the Kiva Fellows Program. He is a graduate of Washington University in Saint Louis and a frequent speaker in college classrooms about socially motivated microfinance. PETA SHERIDAN - Director

For the better part of the last decade, Peta has worked in the nonprofit sector. Previous to taking the Director role at Chooda, Peta was the Director of Programs for a leading nonprofit in the adventure therapy sector, where she implemented nationwide and international programs, demonstrating great success at growing and scaling programs. To see more about her professional background, please see her LinkedIn profile.  

Peta spent a portion of her teenage years and early twenties living in central southern Africa. She is thrilled to be able to work for an organization whose focus is to fund and raise awareness for essential programs in a place so close to her heart.
