CHOODA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Chooda's committed Board of Directors have organized programs to raise over $800,000 in eight years for organizations working in HIV/AIDS, poverty, and women's empowerment.

  BEN SHASBY - PRESIDENT   Ben joined the Board of Directors at Chooda in 2016 and serves on the Executive Committee.  Ben has long been involved in service through events, programs, and professional roles. He was an AmeriCorps NCCC volunteer and a Peace Corps volunteer in Lesotho. While living in NYC, he volunteered extensively with New York Cares as a recurring project leader and large scale day of service site leader. After moving to San Francisco, he has led corporate volunteer projects, a monthly community project, and has restarted a leadership development fellowship program that engages community members in becoming more involved in the non-profit sector. Ben greatly enjoys engaging others in service, to have them experience the sense of community and accomplishment that accompanies the various ways of giving back.   JOHN TRIPP - TREASURER   John joined the Chooda Board of Directors in 2017 and serves as Treasurer.  He was born on the East Coast, raised in the Midwest, and also lived in Colorado and Texas. He currently resides in San Diego, CA. In every part of the country he visits, his eyes have been open to learn and grow from each region and community. His professional background is in Human Resources and Leadership Development. John has a Bachelors of Science in History from Illinois State University; a teacher's college. He strives to maintain a balance in life with a strong sense of self, a desire to help others know themselves better, and commitment to leave the world a better place than he found it. His passions are connecting with people and providing counsel based on his knowledge and experience. He is married with two "kids"; whippets/dogs Keenan (9 years) and Colby (5 years). His husband, Alex, was born and raised in Dallas/Ft. Since her time in Zambia, Meg has worked in a variety of domestic and international settings, specializing in the design, implementation, and management of health programs. Most recently, she worked as a Regional Prevention Coordinator, partnering with communities in New Orleans and the surrounding regions of Louisiana to improve access to comprehensive HIV/STI prevention services. She recently moved to the Bay Area and is excited to be working with Chooda and Bike Zambia. When Meg is not working she can be found outdoors: traveling, hiking, or taking photos.

As a dynamic leader with more than a decade of experience in the social sector, she helps organizations support their missions through storytelling, fundraising, partnership building, strategic planning, and management of transdisciplinary, geographically dispersed teams. She currently serves as the strategic communications director for the East Africa Preterm Birth Initiative at UCSF, where she developed the communications function and leads all communications efforts. Prior to working at UCSF, Melanie served as the chief communications officer for Breakthrough Collaborative, an education nonprofit with 24 affiliate sites across the US. For more than a decade, Melanie ran her own communications consulting firm, WiseExposition, where she had the privilege of working with hundreds of Bay Area professionals in nonprofits, educational institutions, and corporations.

The company was founded in 2010.  The goal of the company is to bring a broad range of marketing services to small firms which may not have significant marketing resources in house, or to large firms with an overflow of marketing needs.  Stephanie has completed her fourth 550-mile  AIDS/Lifecycle  bike ride from SF to LA. In addition to being an active cyclist, she is an avid traveler and thrill seeker who is looking forward to the epic bungee jumping that is rumored to exist at Victoria Falls, where the bike route ends. Currently, JD is the Executive Director of International Bird Rescue, a not-for-profit which works to mitigate the human impact on seabirds and other aquatic species through wildlife rehabilitation, emergency response and planning, research and education. He previously served as Director of Truelift, an initiative to create a trust mark signifying commitment to positive and enduring change for people living in poverty. He brings extensive experience in not-for-profit organizational development and change management, including Kiva, ACCION, and the U.S. Peace Corps in Bulgaria.
